The Banner Irish Pub

Where oh where do I start with this one?  I could probably make a whole blog about the Banner but all the other cool stuff in this town has given me plenty of content.  My first experience at the Banner was a few years ago when I was looking for something to do on a Saturday night and found a local Grateful Dead cover band, Dupree’s Diamonds , was playing in Rockland.  We dropped off the kids and headed out for a night of drinks and tunes.  When we pulled up I was already enamored because I have a love of older and victorian style homes and this building was fabulous.  We walked in and the band was jammin’,  I loved the atmosphere and cool dive-y vibe.  We enjoyed our night and went home and it was a while before I got to back.

It seems in Rockland that the Banner is similiar to something Jerry Garcia from The Grateful Dead once said about the band, “We’re like licorice. Not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice really like licorice.”  I guess I not only really like The Dead but I also REALLY like The Banner.  The drinks are strong and cheap (well…. if you can call anything in the Boston area cheap……but I digress), the food is good quality, big portions and affordable prices,  they have live music 7 nights a week including the rockin’ Wednesday night jam session that is my absolute favorite night of the week, the Paddy-O (a Key West reminiscent outside area with big screens, a bar, bag toss, two PEACH TREES?!?!, and a claw foot tub with tomato plants) and on…..and on…… and on……. I told you guys this would be a long one….

The Blue Moon Coffeehouse

Amazing national and regional bluegrass bands playing monthly in Rockland……. Yup, that’s right.  Right on Webster Street at the Channing Unitarian Universalist Church you will find The Blue Moon Coffeehouse serving up some awesome bluegrass tunes monthly. Shows start at 7:30 pm and tickets are $10 at the door (children under 12 are free)  Click here to learn more!

Lightning Willow Farm

Tucked away at the beginning of Liberty Street is another hidden gem, Lightning Willow Farm.  Meag and Steve have a fabulous family farm with goats, chickens, ducks and more!  You may know Lightning Willow and Meag from one of the MANY area farmers markets they attend with her unparalleled natural skin care products!  She formulates and hand crafts tons of different products with their own herbal infusions (many grow right there on the farm)  and wonderful goats milk soap fresh from the goats!

You can visit the shop right at 31 Liberty St.  Monday-Thursday 10am-2pm and Saturday 12-5pm.  Also at the NEW ROCKLAND FARMERS MARKET (post to follow after I attend!) on Friday’s from 3-7pm.

WRPS 88.3

Would you believe it if I told you that Rockland has it’s own alternative radio station??  Well tune into 88.3 and hear for yourself!  Practically commercial free (except for awesome supportive local businesses) you will hear a rockin’ mix of alternative tunes from the past and present.  I listen to my iphone a lot but my car radio is ALWAYS tuned to 88.3!

Hartsuff Park

Swimming, hiking, 18 hole free disc golf course, a brand new playground and all for free dollars?!?!?!  Have you been to this hidden gem set back off of Hingham St?  As you pull into the woods and parking lot there are nice fields and hidden behind is the Natural Science building (which from the 2016 town meeting budget I believe they are rehabbing and can’t wait for it to open!)  Park your car and walk into the park where you can choose your own adventure!  Stop for a minute and browse the contents of the “Little Free Library” or bring a book to share with the community! Here you can also check out the bulletin board with community happenings.  Head straight down the path for the playground or swimming hole, turn and walk the trails or turn to your right and tee up for the first hole of disc golf (but WATCH OUT the bridge is out and its a tough shot!)  Summer camps are available all summer at Hartsuff through the Rockland Youth Commission.

Welcome to Rockin’ Rockland

Hellllllllllo and welcome to my brand new blog about a town I love dearly, Rockland, MA.  I am a newer resident to Rockland (only two years) but I LOVE this town.  I grew up only 15 minutes away in Quincy but knew nothing of Rockland.  After having my second daughter in 2012 we left city life and moved to Marshfield.  Well it was way too far and basically soulless. So after 3 years there we ended up selling and finding our dream home in Rockland.  I had experienced some of the cool spots that I will be sharing with and reviewing for you but once I moved here my love affair with this town really blossomed.  The more I explore and learn about this town the more I love it.  I have found by talking to friends, neighbors, and just people on my errands that many don’t know just how Rockin’,  Rockland really is.  My mission is to change that!  I hope to share some new things on this page that you may not have known before and I am ALWAYS open to suggestions of cool places to check out and review.

I am a mother to two young daughters and I instill a strong sense of community and shopping local is an important value to me and one I want to show my girls.
